The SOPI Assessment Introduction Seminar
Online self-study course you can start anytime and have 30 days to finish
The Simulated Oral Proficiency Interview (SOPI) is a proficiency-based performance assessment. Examinees listen to directions for speaking tasks from a master tape and follow along in a test booklet. As the examinee responds to each task, their speaking performance is recorded on a tape. The tape is evaluated by a trained rater who scores the performance according to the proficiency guidelines developed by the American Council on the Teaching of Foreign Languages (ACTFL). Examinees receive a rating based on the ACTFL proficiency scale
The SOPI assessment is becoming a popular tool used by schools and organisations for determining the speaking proficiency of their learners. In order to help these learners understand the SOPI assessment and prepare for it Compass Learning Services has designed a self-study online course. The course includes the following:
- An overview of proficiency goals for language learning.
- An introduction to the ACTFL (American Council on the Teaching of Foreign Languages) proficiency scale that is used by the SOPI test.
- An outline of the SOPI test and the type of tasks that are included.
- Advice on how to prepare for the test and get the most out of the assessment experience.
- Sample test questions so you can have an experience of a SOPI-style test.
The course takes approximately 10 hours to complete and you can do it in your own time within 30 days of enrolling. A facilitator reviews your learning and is available to answer questions. You have the option of a free individual meeting with the instructor by Skype.
This course has been co-designed by Janelle Moore who is a Chinese SOPI rater certified by the Center of Applied Linguistics (CAL), Georgetown University, USA, and has more than 10 years experience with SOPI assessments, including rating assessments and training Chinese raters.
If you have already taken the “Setting Goals and Making Plans” course, then some of the materials in this course are a review.
